NHS Blood and Transplant Donors
What We Do
Our work is dedicated to saving and improving lives.
We provide a Blood and Transplant service to the NHS which means supplying enough safe blood to hospitals in England and North Wales and providing tissues and solid organs to hospitals across the UK, and we can't do it alone. Each year our donors give around two million donations of blood and 3,500 organs – saving and transforming countless lives.
Safeguarding blood supply and increasing the number of donated organs involves collecting, testing, processing, storing and delivering blood, plasma and tissue to every NHS Trust in England and North Wales. We also match, allocate, audit and analyse organ donations across the whole of the UK.
You can access the full NHS Blood and Transplant site here.
We are privileged to have some of the world's most modern and innovative facilities at our blood and tissue centres. We are also privileged to have the support of so many amazing donors – for blood, tissues and organs. Our centres receive and process these blood and tissue donations under tight guidelines with incredible efficiency – ensuring that products are successfully delivered to the hospitals that need them every day.
As a Special Health Authority in England and Wales – accountable to the Department of Health – we are responsible for managing all the products and services previously provided by the National Blood Authority and UK Transplant, including:
- Promoting blood, tissue and organ donation to the public
- Managing the supply of blood to hospitals in England and North Wales
- Managing organ transplantation in the UK
- Managing the British Bone Marrow Register
- Working with hospital colleagues to promote the safe and appropriate use of blood
- Providing a range of tissues and other services to hospitals
- Provision of a wide range of diagnostic services
